Course Description:
This course introduces students to Family and Consumer Science and is a prerequisite for other courses in the Family and Consumer Science pathway. Students will learn about the following topics: Family and Consumer Resources and Services, Family and Community Services, Human Development, Nutrition and Wellness, Housing Interiors, and Interpersonal Relationships.
Textbook: Skills for Personal and Family Living (To be left in the classroom)
YOUR GRADE FOR THIS COURSE WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING PERCENTAGES:

Participation/Notebook 25%
Tests 15%
Class Work 15%
Comprehensive Final 15%
Total 100%
Grades will be based on the Cobb County Schools Grading Scale:
100 – 90% = A 89 – 80% = B 79 – 74% = C 73 – 70% = D 69% and below = F
Class Expectations
Attendance / Tardiness
You are expected to attend every class and be on time. If you have an excused absence as outlined in your Wheeler High School Student Handbook, it is your responsibility to get all missed make-up assignments and turn them in on time. According to the
Wheeler
High School
policy, you will have one day for each absence plus an additional day to complete any missed work.
Writing Across the Curriculum
We will participate in 3 different days of Writing Across the Curriculum. This is vital to keeping you up to date on the expectations of the Writing Test when it comes time for that. There will be a grade given for this and will be recorded as a class work grade.
Behavior
Mature behavior is expected and required in this course. Rules, Procedures, Consequences, and Rewards will be discussed during the first week of class.
Hall Passes
All personal business MUST be taken care of before or after class. Each student will only be given FIVE HALL PASSES FOR THE SEMESTER AND THE STUDENT MUST HAVE THEIR STUDENT HANDBOOK.
F.Y.I—There will be no passes for the first and last 15 minutes of class
Cell Phones, Ipods and mp3 devices
The use of cell phones, Ipods and mp3 devices for any reason is not allowed during class time. Failure to comply with this will result in an administrative referral.
Class Materials Needed:
Large 3 Ringed Binder
Notebook Dividers (Journal entries, Cornell Notes, Class Work, Essential Question/Summary, Graded Papers)
Pencils/Pens
Loose Leaf Paper
Markers/Crayons/Colored Pencils
Face Tissue, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes and lotion will be greatly appreciated on a voluntary basis.
Class Rules:
5 B’s
· Be prompt – and in your assigned classroom when the bell rings
· Be prepared – and have all appropriate materials when you arrive.
· Be polite – and respectful to yourself, others, and ALL adults with behavior and language.
· Be quiet – and remain seated.
· Be quizzical – Raise your hand, ask question! (Don’t stay confused)

Kitchen Safety Training
All students will be trained in kitchen safety, sanitation, and equipment handling during the Foods and Nutrition Unit. Students and Parents will sign to acknowledge that students will be trained to operate kitchen equipment with care and in a safe manner; failure to behave in a responsible manner will result in the loss of kitchen lab privileges. If students intentionally break any classroom object or kitchen equipment they will be financially responsible.

Internet and Computer Use Agreement
Classroom computers are for instructional purposes only. Students can not use computers to listen to music and/or research non-instructional material or topics. Using the computers or internet inappropriately will result in the loss of computer privileges for the semester. The use of proxies to access restricted websites is NOT allowed. Parents and Students will sign to acknowledge that if the rules are not followed for computer and internet use students will loose these privileges according to the student handbook.
